How did you send it? Unless it went Global Priority, everything else is the "slow boat" even regular priority is only that within the US. Once it leaves the US, you are at the mercy of the foreign postal companies.

What was the estimate delivery time that USPS gave you?

It's possible your package is stuck in customs.

Apleyden is correct, but I would make one additional suggestion. Your first step should be to contact the British Embassy or the nearest consulate to verify visa requirements and any other legalities. If you can't get permission to stay for a year and, if necessary, to work, then nothing else that you do will matter.

Message boards can be helpful and you may get some good information. However, I would not rely on them for visa or residency advice. Much like Yahoo Answers, anyone can post to a message board - even if their information is completely wrong.

Well the first thing you need to sort out is the legality of being an American in the UK. Your visa waiver that you get at the airport is only good for 90 days, and you will not be able to work while over there. You'll have to prove you have a ticket home and the resources to survive while there or you'll get turned back at the immigration desk and sent back home.

Why don't you take a look at the US expats in the UK messageboard and get some ideas from them. It's going to take a bit of planning. You might consider taking a year and 'studying abroad' so you do a few days in school and then a few days goofing off around Europe with your classmates. Probably a few people who have done the same thing.

It totally depends on which area you live in.

Central London is very safe day and night, but you probably wouldn't want to walk about Homerton, parts of Brixton or Seven Sisters late night on your own.

But mostly if you keep to common sense - i.e. look like you know where you are going, avoid unfamiliar areas and travelling upstairs on Night Buses...then you probably won't have any more problems than most other big cities.

The very cheapest areas to live in tend to be so for a reason, so it's worth paying a bit more so you feel safe to move about when you need to.

Sites like Gumtree have accomodation forums where people post asking about certain districts.

No its not dangerous, its very safe, safer than I feel here in the USA. However, every big city has its bad neighborhoods, so just be careful when your out and about. Croydon on the east side isn't the safest, Hackney in north London isn't the safest, and Seven Sisters either. Apartments are expensive..try the "looking for roommates" ads instead of renting by yourselves, it'll be cheaper.

No.

Safer that any city of its size that I can think of. The biggest problem are pick pockets, sneak thieves, and Man Untited supporters (when in town).

Hobbycraft usually have a board where people advertise classes. If you have one near, it's worth checking out.
